Braunston Marina and surrounds

The local area and marina at Braunston.Picture of Braunston Marina

Braunston Marina is one of the largest in country. This is the home of Merlin Narrowboats and many other canal businesses. Here you can find David Thomas boat builders, a fine steel builder. Peter Nicholls, probably our best known resident and Tradline fenders our resident fender maker. Of course there is also Braunston Marina Ltd who operate the whole site and offer moorings, chandlery, gas, diesel, pump out, washing/drying machines, dry docking, etc.

Locally in Braunston there are two major chandlers. The most well known is, of course, Midland Chandlers in its new purpose built premises right by the junction. They have mooring for passing boaters and excellent car parking. Aquafax has also opened a branch by the bottom lock. They are offering a growing range of products at competitive prices. Mooring is available outside the premises and a small customers car park is just outside.

The local British Waterways office is in the stop house beside the old stop lock. The area manager operates from here. The stop house houses the offices as well as providing an excellent information service.

Finally Braunston offers a full range of services. These include the lock shop right beside the bottom lock. This shop seems to have some of everything from food to maps and ice cream to toys. In the main village there are three pubs, a super butcher, a small supermarket, a real baker and even a fish and chip shop

Also beside the bottom lock there can be found the chandlery of Aquafax. The Midland Chandlers premises are at the junction of the GUC and the Oxford. Both these chandlers are marked with a circle on the map.
